Can You Really Return a Dead Christmas Tree? Costco’s Craziest Return Stories

Costco has the most generous return policy in the world. They have a “100% satisfaction guarantee” with almost no time limit.

But some shoppers take this policy to a whole new level. Here are three of the craziest, real-life things people actually successfully returned to Costco:

 1. A Dead Christmas Tree (in January)

Yes, a woman actually brought back a completely dead, dried-out Christmas tree in January and asked for a full refund because “it died.” Unbelievably, Costco refunded her money.

 2. An 8-Year-Old Mattress

One customer returned a mattress they had been sleeping on for eight whole years. Even though it was stained and worn, Costco accepted the return and gave them a full refund.

 3. An Empty Bottle of Wine

Another member tried to return an empty bottle of wine because it “gave them a headache.” And yes, they got their money back for the empty bottle!

Is There a Catch?

While Costco’s policy is incredibly kind, you shouldn’t abuse it.
If a customer returns too many used items or constantly abuses the system, Costco will flag their account. In extreme cases, they can and will cancel their membership permanently.
So, while you can return almost anything, it’s always best to play fair!
